Birregurra Hall Indigenous Mural Project Update
Over the past three months or so now, community members from in and around Birregurra have been working alongside Gunditjmara artist, Joey Chatfield, to create a large mural work telling the story of Birregurra and its relationship to Birregurra Hall.
Using traditional painting techniques, including improvising with various tools to apply paint, over 40 individuals have worked collaboratively to bring this project to life.
Here is a short video to show you just how much progress has been made on the mural.
The project has seen local artists work alongside community members, spending up to 6 hours a week whiling away time on intricate dot work. Most people drop in for a few hours a fortnight while some find the process truly meditative and relaxing, making it part of their weekly ritual.
Anyone can come along and have a go, and after a bit of time honing your dot technique on some spare board, you too can put your stamp on the mural. Sessions are held at the old Birregurra Butter Factory, opposite the timber mill, and over the rail line from Birregurra Train Station.
Next sessions will be:
Wed 6 Dec: 1.30pm – 4pm
Wed 13 Dec: 1.30pm – 4pm
Sun 17 Dec: 10am – 12.30pm.
After these sessions, we will wrap up the year with a final push and pizza celebration. Come along and join in the fun on Wed 20th Dec from 5.30pm.
