Come and play at THE YARDS in Birregurra - Call out to artists, performers and community groups from

Just in case you missed it, Birregurra’s Small Town Transformation project, enLIGHTen Me: I Have a Hall in my Heart, is inviting artists, performers, gardeners, dance/fitness instructors and community members of all kinds to come and get involved in “THE YARDS” pop up village green.

THE YARDS is a quirky and creative pop up arts and community village green that will temporarily activate the west lawn of Birregurra Hall into a playful space that will host to a range of community events, performances, workshops and high quality temporary art installations over four weekends in January/February 2017.

THE YARDS invites locals and visitors to reimagine the usually unused space—inspiring conversations about Birregurra’s Small Town Transformation, landscaping plans for the hall and the creative activation of underutilised spaces in regional towns.

A program of activities and events will run from Friday to Monday in conjunction with the Birregurra Community Arts Group Pop Up Gallery (email birreartsgroup@gmail.com to submit your work for sale).

Each day of the program has a theme for activities which are:

  • Friday – Music inc jam sessions/group practice sessions/percussion workshops/taster workshops/performances before 6pm

  • Saturday – Creative hands on workshops and activities (arts/crafts etc)

  • Sunday – Anything to do with gardening, food and sustainability

  • Monday – All things wellbeing and fitness including dancing, yoga, martial arts etc

If you are someone who would like to get involved or know someone who would, please share this email or get in touch asap. Specifically, THE YARDS is looking for:

  • Visual artists to contribute to the look and feel of the space with up-cycled installations that inspire creativity, engage visitors or are functional (or all three) – the focus in on repurposed and recycled materials and there are small budgets of up to $300 available to help with time and materials.   • Theatre/set designers/visual artists to create a background/backdrop for the performance space ($500 budget available)(to be installed by 12 Jan)

  • Artists, performers and drama groups who would like to use the space to experiment with the presentation of new works or display/demonstrate their work

  • Artists who would like to test some ideas for workshops/installations/activities for adults, children, elderly, people with disabilities on Saturdays

  • Musicians and music groups who would like to jam in the space, run taster workshops, drive group membership (on Fridays)

  • Gardeners/garden groups/nursery owners who would like to run a gardening related activities on Sundays during the project (great for promoting your activities and driving membership). i.e. plant swaps, informative presentations, forums, shared lunch, info stalls etc (open to ideas)

  • Health and wellbeing, and fitness instructors (ie. Fitness, yoga, tai chi, dance, Pilates) who would like to have their regular session in the space, test a new format, hold a free session to promote the activity. Also great for presenting information, have a discussion, engaging people.

  • Community groups from Birregurra and district (including Deans Marsh, Barwon Downs, Beeac, Forrest, Winchelsea, Pennyroyal, Colac, Gerangamete etc) who would like to run an activity or event, who have fundraising ideas for the space or would like to promote their activities more generally

There is no hire fee for the space and we can provide a range of resources for you to use including marquees, chairs, tables and power. We can also promote your activities through media advertising/editorials and social media channels.
